Introduction to CEC Requirement for Accredited NFPT-CPT Certification

The cost of CECs is included in your annual NFPT fee! No additional travel or courses are required when you complete the semi-annual selftests!

Continuing education is a necessary part of maintaining your professional NCCA Accredited NFPT-CPT credential. As a successful Personal Fitness Trainer, you understand the need for continuing to educate yourself in the area of Personal Trainer knowledge, skills, and abilities. Continuing education goes beyond the initial NFPT-CPT assessment and assures your employer/clients that you do in fact educate yourself consistently with information relative to your profession.

The NFPT-CPT requires two (2) Continuing Education Credits (CECs) per year to maintain your accredited certification status starting after the first year of your certification. NFPT-CPT certification is renewed on an annual basis with CECs that are obtained through a variety of fitness related sources. You will have an expiration date on your NFPT-CPT certificate which will indicate the starting point for continuing education maintenance. The NFPT will send you a reminder postcard twice per year to ensure that you are aware of this CEC requirement. The renewal of your Accredited NFPT-CPT certification is contingent on the maintenance of CECs. Below are NFPT's primary and secondary sources for continuing education with related descriptions of each.

* The NFPT does not allow for advanced credit, you must obtain CECs semi-annually within the 6 month periods between January-June and July-December.

For your convenience, minimum CEC requirements can currently be acquired through valid online education and assessment! Our Board of Education approves and recognizes Personal Trainer Today educational content as meeting qualifications for CECs. After your first year of certification, in the months of June & December, at your convenience, simply return to this website and complete the user friendly online CEC "Self-Tests" for errorless and immediate scoring and processing!

Each of these self-tests constitutes one (1) credit, whereas two (2) credits are necessary per certification year. Therefore, if utilizing the self-test method for continuing education, it is necessary to complete two self-tests each certification year, or one self-test every June and December as posted. These self-tests ensure that you will read and research fitness related articles from the Personal Trainer Today online publication as self-test questions specifically reference articles posted from the previous 6 month period. You may take the self-test until the necessary 100% score has been achieved. Self-tests will take you approximately 2 or more hours to complete, but you may save and return to your test if needed. You will be given an NFPT identification number, located on your certification membership card, that will be used to log into the self-tests. This number acts as verification of your identity and allows the NFPT to immediately merge your self-test score into your NFPT file. Upon verification of the completion of your NFPT self-tests, or 2 CECs, you will be allowed the opportunity to renew your NFPT CPT credential.

Any NFPT Specialty Certificate acts as one (1) NFPT credit. By successfully completing the Advanced Sports Nutrition, the Advanced Weight Training, or the Advanced Endurance Training program, you will NOT be required to take the above discussed self-test for the 6 month period in which you had taken one of the mentioned specialty courses. These courses meet continuing education qualifications as established by the NFPT Certification Council and as described below. Please refer to the link below for more information.
